youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years .

we grow old by deserting our ideals.

years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusia** wrinkles the soul . worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynici** and the ice of pessimi**, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimi** , there is hope you may die young at 80.

the greatest invention in my eyes is the telephone, which is essential today in every house. and i believe that each person here own a lovely cell phone, including myself. what dose this phenomena mean?

needless to say, with only over 100-year’s development, telephone has already assumed a role as a family member. (“ played an important part in our daily life ”. ) amazing invention, isn’t it?

and now, let us have a view at the evolution: thousands of years ago, it was not possible or at least very hard for people far away from home having contact with their hometown, which means they could do nothing but to lose contact with their family; then, hundreds of years ago, people away from home could keep in touch with their family only by letters, which they needed to wait for weeks, months for a response; and now, attention, within seconds you can have a pleasant talk with a somebody thousands and thousands away! wonder, isn’t it?

now, please draw a picture in your mind: you only need to pick up your cell phone, to press the amazing numbers, to wait for several seconds and after she/he get the telephone, to make your voice fly through the air-sea in the form of radio, then a contact is being made as i am ****** the speech for you.

while, what i appreciate most is not the convenience the telephone offered, but the bridges it made which create contacts between you and your beloved parents, and your hometown thousands away. these bridges work as follows: when you are unhappy, bridge will be made to easy your broken heart by your lovely parents; when you are success, it will be made to share your enjoyment with your friends; when you are helpless, phone call will be made to strengthen your determination, also to give you encouragements.

through those bridges, can’t you find something?

reading books

one of the most popular hobbies among people is reading books. more and more people spend their spare time in reading the books they are interested in.

there are so many books in the world that it is impossible for any one to read all of them, even if he spends his whole life in reading. before we start reading, we should find out whether it is valuable for us to read.

reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. it can enrich our knowledge. it makes us learn lots of things we did not previously know.

we can be aware of what had happened in the past as well as what is happening in the present time. the more books we read, the more knowledge we get. no matter how much education we receive or how much expensive we have, we can not be***e a full man unless we keep reading.

reading bad books will lead you to a wrong way and prevents you from progressing. it’s worse than reading nothing. so we know how important it is to read good books.

book can be read at random time if you have leisure, and there never be a time limitation. also, you can read a book to achieve a more really history. through a book, you can ***municate with its author without other’s tran**ission.

all these rarely can be easily achieved by a television.

furthermore, book is a treasure that has developed centuries. as we know when written language appeared, human beings became use it to record their lives, and this action leaves us a lot of historic precious mineral. we can absorb intelligence and wisdom, and we can also be taught lessons.

i love book from my heart, form book i know how to ***municate with others, and i learn my homeland is the place i love best, and also i know my parents are the very individuals who i love through my life. what about the television? television, sometimes, show violence, ***, drugs beyond our choice

classifying rubbish , improving environment

good morning, respectable judges, teachers. today, standing here makes me feel really honored and excited. the title of my speech is classifying rubbish , improving environment.

personally, rubbish has been a big headache in beijing. as

the year 2008 is ***ing ,every citizen has realized green beijing and green olympics will bring the far-reaching impact on beijing and even all china . the scense of rubbish nearly everywhere has given all of us a really bad impression, and i'm sure none of us wish to show off the bad side of beijing to athletes and journalists all over the world, for it would blemish the city's and even china's image and leave a bad reputation. so we really have to work hard on green olympics.

now, we are middle school students. we must improve the sense of protecting the environment and make a contribution to green olympics .

in our life, a lot of rubbish , such as waste *****, plastic bottles ,batteries and so on , is produced every day . after we learnt the passage make our environment more beautiful , we found a lot of rubbish thrown into dustbins could be recycled in fact during our discussion. so we thought it would be better if we could classify rubbish .

we told our idea to our teacher and he supported us very much . we became volunteers to classify rubbish . firstly we got three big boxes and put them in a corner of our classroom .

one is for waste ***** , one for plastics and coke cans and the other is for batteries . with teacher's help ,soon all the students took part in the activity of classifying rubbish .in a month , we collected three boxes of ***** , a box of batteries and a box of plastics and coke cans .

we sold them for 28 yuan and bought some young trees with the money . we planted the trees around our school . we were all spoken highly of by our school principals.

now we keep on the job and are all proud of improving environment .

the world trusts beijing .beijing still has a lot to do to reach the level the world expects, but we have the confidence to make beijing a green city. great changes are taking place, and not far in the future, beijing will be the focus of all worlds' attention.

尊敬的评委、老师们，你们好！有幸站在这里，我感到是一种荣耀，我此时的心情非常激动。我演讲的主题是：垃圾分类，改善环境！

应该说，垃圾问题一直是我们的大问题。随着2008年的临近，每一个市民都深切地意识到"绿色北京，绿色奥运"对北京乃至中国将有着多么深远的影响！几乎到处都是垃圾的景象给我们留下了深刻的印象。

我们把这个想法告诉了班主任，得到了老师的大力支持。所以我们成为了垃圾分类的志愿者。首先我们找到三个大盒子，把他们放在教室的一角。

一个用于废纸，一个用于塑料制品和可乐罐，一个用于收集旧电池。在老师的帮助下，全班同学很快就参加了垃圾分类活动。一个月内，我们收集了三盒废纸、一盒电池和一盒塑料瓶。

这些垃圾卖28元。我们用这些钱买了一些小树，在学校周围种上。我们的行动受到学校领导的高度赞扬。现在我们仍然坚持垃圾分类活动，我们为我们改善环境的努力感到骄傲！

my chinese dream when preparing for the english speech contest, i simply want to search some articles as the contents of my speech. i read a lot of articles, some from the university professor, some from the famous host, some from the college students, and even from junior high school students. but after reading it, i gave up the idea, i even felt shameful.

Thank you very much!非常感谢！在接下来的时间里，我将和大家一起分享一下学英语的苦辣酸甜。最主要的，是想通过我在北大六年教学经历、美国六年生活经历、“新东方”六年教学经历，来和大家交流一下怎能样尽快的提高大家的listeing and speaking comprehensions.

我的经历具体是这样的：我是1980年从内蒙古考到北大的，比大家高了好多届。我在北大学英文，然后又在北大教书。教书六年之后，在1990年，我求学到美国。我发现到了，美国一下飞机，我一句话也听不懂。当时我想，至少我学了几年英文，所以打算继续学英文。正在我在考虑到哪里去的时候，我听到一种说法，叫做everybody in American can speak English。那么我又怎么能够在美国赚钱呢？所以，我必须改变这个想法。于是我该学了学计算机。计算机硕士毕业以后，我在美国的贝尔实验室做了两年的软件工程师。在1995年，“新东方”的创始人俞敏洪来到了美国，在他的建议下，我有回国，开始参加“新东方”的创建。我和俞敏洪在北大是同班同学——“新东方”的五个“创业元老”里有三个是北大的同学。除了我们两个还有一个是“新东方”的图书总策划包凡一老师，他是“新东方”的写作专家。我在大学时代是他们的班长，他们两个当时是全班最落后的学生。我那时的主要精力和时间都花在每天晚上陪他们两个在湖畔散步，劝

他们不要跳下去。我告诉他们说：“你们将来一定会成才的。”到了96年，我在新东方担任副校长的时候，有一个大学生就问我说：“王老师，你上大学时四年都是他们的班长，你现在却是他们的副校长，你的心理平衡怎么找？”我说：“不用找，我现在心理是最平衡的。我当初当班长最大的夙愿就是帮助这两个后进青年成才。今天看到他们已经纷纷成才了，我的夙愿已经了了。平衡彻底找到了。”——我们的确都要找到一个平衡的方法，只有心态平衡下来，你才能够干成伟大的事业。

在美国的时候我学计算机之前，还有一段小插曲。那就是我险些报考了哈佛的人力学系。我离开北大之后，吸引我的学校只有两所，一所是英国的牛津大学，就是Oxford University；另一所呢就是Harvard University。那时候，哈佛大学人力学系的系主任，对我进行了面试之后觉得可以录取我，并且提出可以给我提供五年的Scholarship。他说：“你只要答应我一个条件，”我说：“什么条件？”——这个教授研究的是非常偏的一个科目，所以招生好多年都没有找到一个合适的学生。他是在人力学系研究中国文化中苗族文化的。——他说：“只要你跟我学苗语，我就给你奖学金。”我说：“可以。”但是，我冷静下来之后想：我拿了这些钱，在五年之内，过的是天上人间的日子。就算不能从哈佛大学毕业，也能够肄业。将来至少能够跟孙子夸口说，爷爷当年进过哈佛。但是这还不行，因为我拿到这个学位，最终的目的是要找个饭碗。我就考虑，在北美这样大片的土地上，有多少地方需要我这样的人才呢？——苗族文化专家。通过“研究”，我发现，全北美只有一个地方需要，就是哈佛大学、人力学系、这位老师。所以，如果全北美只有一个机会，他的目标里只有我一个人，那么这个机会对我来说是百分之百的！但是，五年之后，我仍然处于一个非常劣势的地位。我如果能在哈佛大学拿到学位，接下来的梦想就是当上哈佛大学的教授、终身教授。美国大学关于终身教授的规定：只要这个教授不去世，你就别想替代他。我想，万一我六十岁就“夭折“了，那位教授八十多岁还健在，我也还是助教。想到这儿，我就对那位教授说：“I want to learn something different。”

当时是1990年，计算机在美国变得popular。而且招生的指标还有70个，我觉得这是个attract opportunity，于是决定学计算机。如果学计算机，我就可以成为一个“计算机科学家”，就可以make money。但当时，我已经十年没摸过数学了，计算机也从来没有接触过。我想，我能不能学计算机呢？我用亚里士多德的“三段论”来推导这个问题：计算机是人发明的东西，凡是人都应该懂人发明的东西。最后，如果我学不了计算机，我就不是人。得出这个结论之后，我就要做一些实际的调查，看一看计算机到底是什么。我到了纽约最大的书店，看看计算机架上到底有些什么书。其中有两架书，

上面都有两个共同的词，这两个词深深地吸引了我，那就是programming languages。我看见的.其实只有一个词：languages。这个词说明我与计算机是有关系的——我想，汉语是一种language，英文是我的first foreign language，法语是我的二外语，德语是第三外语。这个“编程语言”与我所会的这四门语言一定有共同的地方，所以才能一样叫语言。于是，我就挑了一本书，看自己能不能读懂，结果发现没有一页读懂的。但是我发现了编程中很重要的一样东西，是逻辑流程。我就靠这两点——语言和逻辑，和纽约州立大学计算机系的系主任约会，说：“我是一个非常优秀的人才，你必须录取我。”他看了我的成绩单以后，说：“可是，你在北大学习的四年中，没有一门课程与教学和计算机有关。”我说：“请等一下，我给你陈述一下你为什么必须要我——哈佛大学正在在考虑录取我呢！另外，我有三点非常强的优势。第一，计算机与其他机器相比最重要的特点是它能安装软件，那么什么是软件呢？”他说：“programs 。”我又问：“那么我们用什么来写这个programs呢？”他说：“language。”我说：“那你再看看我的成线单，最重要的一个词是什么？”老师说：“language。”我说：“我已经掌握了四门语言，再学一门方言是易如反掌。”教授说：“有道理。”然后我又说：“计算机能够工作，它离不开人预设的逻辑。我在北大做了六年老师，做老师最大的特点就是训练一个人的逻辑思维结构。我已经

在更高的层次上，你需要用自己的经验来完成演讲。这时的演讲者口语、发音、断句已不成问题，因此我手写我心更能引起他人兴趣，也更容易表达。

接下来，便是选材的时候了。你对演讲方式的决定并不影响你对材料的选择。笔者认为，选择英语演讲材料是早晨选择一些散文的最大禁忌。这种散文有一种特点，断句短，一段没有几句就结束了。

这类文章适合记忆，但不适合演讲。

最好从你自己的经历或一个小故事开始。因为评委观众的水平层次高低分层很大，此时的开头一定要用词简单，文法也不易过杂，当然也不能只用类似只有主谓宾的句子。当人们能够理解的时候，他们愿意倾听。

当然，文章的开头和结尾一定很吸引人。开头不妨用三四个排比的问句，以问句引出正文，最后结尾再用几个排比的陈述来说明自己的建议或看法。

笔者十分建议在演讲稿中出现排比形式，因为排比句读起来比较有气势，也更好把握语调。一般来说，前几个逗号前的句子是升调，最后一个句子是降调。

演讲中一定要注意断句和音调。没一个人喜欢听一段没有断句而且平淡无奇的演讲，因此，要做好演讲就因该将感情同语言联系起来，这样的演讲才有灵魂。

接下来就是一些演讲小技巧：演讲中一定要注意眼神交流，尤其和评委的眼神交流;不要怕忘词，忘词了也要继续背下去;身体要站直，要有肢体动作，但一定不要来回晃或者抖腿。

最后，这些经历是我英语社团的第一次演讲，也是我作评委的经历，希望对大家有所帮助。

goog morning ,everyone .today my topic is a yuan one hundred yuan is love.

2010 years of may day, for me it is an unusual holiday, some **all reporters of "little master news"、university students and elementary school students came together to the dalian xinghai square ，they joined the activity held by dalian red cross.

i and a elder sister of dalian university of technology went to the collection. mummy was the first of the donation. i and elder sister also gave money, i donated 20 yuan。

" the uncle is moved，he donated 50 yuan. i also imitated the elder sister said: " a yuan is love.

" some donated 20 yuan, some donated 5 yuan, and an american uncle gave us !

一元百元都是爱

大家上午好！今天我演讲的题目是《一元百元都是爱》。

2010年的五一劳动节，对我来说是一个不同寻常的假期，我们《小主人报》大连小记者站的部分小记者和许多大、中、小学生一起来到了大连星海广场参加小主人报大连小记者站和大连红十字会共同举办的为玉树募捐活动。

我和大连理工大学的一个姐姐一起去集资。妈咪是第一个捐款的人。我和姐姐也捐了钱。我第一次捐款就捐了20元。

大姐姐首先对来往的行人说：“我们是红十字会组织的大学生和小学生一起为玉树募捐，您捐一点吧！一分钱也是一份爱心。

”这位叔叔被我们的言语打动。捐了50元。我也照着我姐姐的话，对前来的叔叔说：

“我们是为玉树募捐的，你捐一点吧！一元一角都是爱。”他们有的捐了20元，有的捐了5元，还有一位美国叔叔捐给我们10美元呢！

我们还遇到了一些拒绝的人。我姐姐生气了，我又失望又胆小。姐姐鼓励我说：“你不应该放弃，应该用你的爱心打动人们，多捐一分钱，玉树的小朋友就能早一天住上新房。

”在姐姐和妈妈的鼓励下，我又鼓起了勇气，不厌其烦地向过路的行人重复着说过的话，许多小朋友的爸爸、妈妈让孩子把自己的零用钱放进捐款袋里。

我们的捐款袋鼓了起来，我们的心充满了爱和希望。
